Dear Carl
I have enjoyed looking at your pictures of 50's fashions.
They bring back memories.
As a teenager in the 50's, I can remember being fascinated
by the very tight belts that some of the girls wore. I am
talking about girls who would not be wearing corsets, and
just used the belt to pull in the waist. The interest for
me was more for the belt than a corset.
Occasionally, one would see a girl with a belt pulled as
tight as it would possibly go, sinking into her waist and
reducing it to minute proportions. One girl once said to
me, "The tighter my belt is, the better I like
it". I wonder if any of your readers remember
seeing or doing this.
Incidentally, I am surprised that in the celebrity
gallery, you do not have any pictures of Elizabeth Taylor,
who had one of the prettiest figures at the time. I
remember the beautiful belt she wore in "Elephant
Walk". I read that, at one time, she would pull in
her belts as tight as she could, and was reputed to have a
17" waist.
Cheers
D.
